I work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and geoscience, developing physics-informed and deep learning methods to understand and forecast landslides, earthquakes, and other natural hazards across space and time.

Ashok Dahal is an Assistant Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Geosciences, Faculty ITC, University of Twente, The Netherlands. He completed a PhD in Geophysics and GeoAI (cum laude) at ITC in 2024, following an MSc in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (cum laude, 2022) at the same faculty and a BEng in Geomatics Engineering (with distinction, 2017) from the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, Nepal.

His research develops physics-informed and deep learning methods for natural hazard modelling, with a focus on space–time landslide susceptibility and hazard, coseismic and rainfall-induced slope failure, InSAR-derived ground deformation, and the statistics of extreme geophysical events. His work has been supported through fieldwork and visiting appointments at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), and is published in journals including Communications Earth & Environment, Nature Reviews of Geophysics, Engineering Geology, and Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences.

He currently supervises PhD and MSc research on InSAR-based deformation monitoring, physics-informed neural networks for multi-hazard modelling, and machine learning approaches to flood and landslide mapping, and teaches courses in GeoAI for spatial data analysis and data-driven hazard modelling.
